Let’s Talk About Casey Mittelstadt

A report on Friday afternoon came out from Buffalo Sabres alumni Andrew Peters on “After The Whistle,” a podcast run by Peters & Craig Rivet, claiming that Kevyn Adams is actively shopping forward Casey Mittelstadt. Peters also said that Adams is looking for a goaltender.

I’m going to be 100% honest here. I have no idea if what Peters said is true or not, and I don’t have any insider sources that would confirm it one way or the other. I’m also not saying that we need to believe every rumor or tidbit that’s put out there in the world. That said, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors of Mittelstadt being shopped, and at this point in the season, perhaps it warrants a discussion.

So – if you’re up for it – let’s open a discussion about it.

Mittelstadt, 25, is the Sabres’ leading scorer as of writing. He has 30 assists and a total of 42 points this season and is one of only three players who has skated in all 50 games. (The other two: Peterka & Power.) His 12 goals are sixth-most on the team, and he’s averaging 18:30 ice time per night.

Mittelstadt finished last season with 59 points (15-44) in 82 games.

For me – it’s a no. I see no reason why the Sabres should be shopping Mittelstadt right now. What can you possibly hope to gain from this? And why? It’s not like it’s going to suddenly save the season to trade your top scorer at this point.
