2024 NHL Trade Deadline Open Thread

The 2023-24 NHL Trade Deadline is on Friday, March 8th and all deals must be completed before 3 p.m. ET.

The Buffalo Sabres were in an interesting position going into the last fortnight where they were unlikely to make the playoffs (for the 13th consecutive season) and so were not expected to be big buyers, but at the same time they have a young squad on the verge of breaking out so no one was anticipating General Manager Kevyn Adams selling the farm either.

The Sabres have a couple of veterans that will likely be on the move in Kyle Okposo and Erik Johnson, with Zemgus Girgensons’ name coming up often too. However, the key piece was Casey Mittelstadt who was due a new contract at the end of the season. Adams ended up pulling the trigger on the forward who is leading Buffalo in scoring this season, moving him on Wednesday to the Colorado Avalanche in a straight swap for young Stanley Cup-winning defenseman Bowen Byram to compile what is now looking a formidable defensive corps for the Sabres.

  • Carolina Hurricanes get LW Jake Guentzel and D Ty Smith, Pittsburgh Penguins get LW Michael Bunting, RW Ville Koivunen, C Vasili Ponomarev, RW Cruz Lucius, 2024 conditional second-round pick and 2024 conditional fifth-round pick. The Penguins are retaining 25% of Guentzel’s salary. 
  • Tampa Bay Lightning get LW Anthony Duclair and a 2025 seventh-round pick, San Jose Sharks get prospect D Jack Thompson and a 2024 third-round pick. 
  • Colorado Avalanche get LW Yakov Trenin and D Graham Sward, Nashville Predators get D Jeremy Hanzel and a 2025 third-round pick.
  • Colorado Avalanche get LW Brandon Duhaime, Minnesota Wild get a 2026 third-round pick.
  • Edmonton Oilers get D Troy Stecher and a 2024 seventh-round pick, Arizona Coyotes get a 2027 fourth-round pick.
  • Nashville Predators get LW Anthony Beauvillier, Chicago Blackhawks get a 2024 fifth-round pick.

March 6th

  • Vegas Golden Knights get D Noah Hanifin, Calgary Flames get D Daniil Miromanov, a first-round pick and a conditional third-round pick.
  • New York Rangers get C Alexander Wennberg, Seattle Kraken get a 2024 second-round draft pick and a 2025 fourth-round pick.
  • Colorado Avalanche get C Casey Mittelstadt, Buffalo Sabres get D Bowen Byram.
  • Edmonton Oilers get C Adam Henrique, C Sam Carrick, and a seventh-round pick, Anaheim Ducks get a first-round pick and a conditional fifth-round pick. Tampa Bay Lightning also received a fourth-round pick from Edmonton in the deal as a third-party broker.
  • Colorado Avalanche get D Sean Walker and a 2026 fifth-round pick, Philadelphia Flyers get C Ryan Johansen and a conditional 2025 first-round pick. Johansen was subsequently placed on waivers.
  • Florida Panthers get RW Vladimir Tarasenko, Ottawa Senators get a conditional 2024 fourth-round pick and a 2025 third-round pick.

March 5th

  • Vegas Golden Knights get RW Anthony Mantha, Washington Capitals get a 2024 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs get D Ilya Lyubushkin from the Anaheim Ducks in a three-team trade also involving the Carolina Hurricanes. 

Feb. 28th

  • Dallas Stars get D Chris Tanev, Calgary Flames get prospect D Artem Grushnikov, 2024 second-round pick and conditional 2026 third-round pick. The New Jersey Devils acted as a third-party and get a 2026 fourth-round pick from the Stars, while sending prospect G Cole Brady to the Flames. 

Feb. 22th 

  • Pittsburgh Penguins get F Emil Bemstrom, Columbus Blue Jackets get F Alex Nylander and a conditional 2026 sixth-round pick. 

Feb. 2nd 

  • Winnipeg Jets get C Sean Monahan, Montreal Canadiens get a 2024 first-round pick and conditional 2027 third-round pick. 

Jan. 31st 

  • Vancouver Canucks get C Elias Lindholm, Calgary Flames get LW Andrei Kuzmenko, prospect D Hunter Brzustewicz, prospect D Joni Jurmo, 2024 first-round pick and conditional 2024 pick.
