What to Watch
1. Jack Eichel
Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel makes his All-Star weekend debut tonight. It’ll be interesting to see what events he takes part in. Eichel did confirm he’ll participate in the fastest skater competition as one of his events.
2. New Events
The NHL added the Save Streak challenge this year. Each goalie faces a minimum of nine shots from a lineup of skates from a particular division. If the goaltenders stop the ninth and final shot from the division captain they’ll have the chance to continue the streak in another round of shooters from the same division.
Also, the league changed the accuracy contest a little. Instead of shooters aiming at five stationary targets. This year they’ll take aim at five LED targets that will light up in a random sequence.
3. Hardest Shot
The Hardest shot competition has been between Zdeno Chara and Shea Weber the last few years. Not this year. Neither player is on the All-Star roster this time around. We’ll see if the entertainment from this event is still there without the big bombers.
4. Roster Replacements
In case you missed it there were a few late roster changes recently. Both occurred in the Metro division. Brian Boyle is replacing New Jersey Devils forward Taylor Hall and Zach Werenski is replacing Columbus Blue Jackets teammate Seth Jones who is ill.
You can find the full rosters here.
