Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen commits to Sudbury of the OHL

A report by Ben Leeson from the Sudbury Star indicates that Buffalo Sabres 2017 second round pick Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has committed to playing for the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL next season. Luukkonen himself later tweeted he was joining Sudbury to confirm the report.

The big goaltender will come over from Finland to begin his career in North America. He was selected third overall in the CHL Import Draft by Sudbury back at the end of June.

During development camp, the Finnish goaltender said he would talk with the Sabres and his advisors before making any decisions on his future.

Luukkonen also signed an entry-level contract with the Sabres back in the middle of June and we began to wonder when he would come over from Finland. This is earlier than many expected, but he won’t be coming over to play with the Sabres.

He’ll likely be classified on loan from HPK to Sudbury, which means the OHL rules do not apply to him in terms of turning pro. He can join the Rochester Americans after the Wolves season ends or next season.
