Scott Wilson placed on waivers by the Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres announced Tuesday they have placed winger Scott Wilson on waivers.

Wilson hasn’t played a game with the Sabres this season due to an ankle injury he suffered in the preseason.

Should he go unclaimed, Wilson will likely be headed to Rochester on either a conditioning stint or possibly an extended stay with the Americans.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise. Wilson was signed to a two year contract extension in the offseason and all signs pointed to him being close to returning to the team. Wilson scored 14 points in 49 games last year for the Sabres and provided depth to a team that severely needed it.

This is likely a situation where there are just too many mouths to feed for the Sabres right now and Wilson was the odd man out. With Zemgus Girgensons being activated off injured reserve and Wilson close to returning, the Sabres needed to make a move to stay under the NHL roster limit of 23.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Wilson. The Sabres are likely banking on him going unclaimed. This is possible for a player who scored just 16 points last season and hasn’t played at all this year.

Should he see time with Buffalo sometime this season, Wilson could be a great addition to the Sabres without them having to make any trade at all.
