When tonight’s game went to overtime, and then a shootout, what thoughts ran through your head? Be honest, it’s OK, we’re all friends here.
And I’ll give you a dollar if you thought that Rasmus Ristolainen and Zemgus Girgensons would help the Sabres win the shootout, which went to the tenth round, the longest shootout victory in team history.
Ristolainen, who scored on his first career shootout attempt on a sweet Forsberg move, kept the Sabres alive deep in the skills contest.

And then Girgensons, who had scored three shootout goals in his career, all game winners, put home yet another clincher with a nice quick, stick-side deke.

The Sabres salvaged another unimpressive start, getting just 15 shots on net through the first two periods compared to 26 for the Ducks, but a Rakell goal for Anaheim in the first was answered by an O’Reilly goal in the second, and that 1-1 score held up for the rest of regulation.
One again the Sabres came on strong in the third, but 15 shots and the game’s only power play couldn’t break the tie, and the contest eventually went to overtime.
Which the Sabres miraculously won, the longest shootout victory in the franchise’s history. It was a nice way to end an otherwise depressing road trip, and a fitting present to anyone celebrating in Buffalo during this festive basketball/Irish weekend.
Three Questions
1. Okay, forget an entire game. Can the Sabres at least play competent hockey for just 30 minutes tonight?
Yes? The team played a good third, and some of a good second period tonight. Baby steps are happening!
2. Hey refs, can we get some power plays please?
LOL no. There was only one minor penalty called tonight, but the Sabres couldn’t capitalize. But please, continue to ignore every time Jack Eichel is hacked or hauled to the ice.
3. How bad will the Ducks defensemen make the Sabres defenders look?
Not awful? The Sabres actually played a fairly sound defensive game, tonight. Nilsson made some nice saves, but it’s not like had to be Hasek back there, and he played great in the shootout. The Sabres gave up 40 total shots, but limited the dangerous chances, which is what it’s all about.

Here! Late, as usual. Had the In-laws over for dinner. They stayed for a movie..
and all I could think of was Sabres’ Hockey. Am I sick, or what?
