Introduction: Jason Pominville needs no introduction – we all know this guy, right? It seems like we’ve known Pominville forever, but he’s not yet reached 30 years old. You know exactly what you’re getting from him with no surprises, but whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is up to you. Aside from his injury this year, Pominville has been remarkably consistent as a Sabre, especially over the past three seasons. So how do you feel about that? We’ll dive in a little deeper after the break.
Key Stat: Consistency, thy name is no longer Jason Pominville. After playing 336 consecutive games without missing time, Pommers was finally taken out of the lineup after being concussed by Chicago’s Niklas Hjalmarsson and missed nine games. The team’s record during those nine games: 2-5-2.
Did You Know: Jason Pominville’s favorite songs are Everybody’s Workin’ For The Weekend, and Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting, and his favorite movie is Saturday Night Fever. I’m just guessing at this because Pominville was a point per game player on Saturdays this season, earning an impressive 19 points in 19 games on the day before Sunday.
Thumbs Up: Pominville’s known for being a clean player, and he set a new low in penalty minutes this season with just 15 – and that included one “fight” against Pittsburgh’s uber-tough guy Matt Cooke. Blocked the third most shots among forwards. Plays in all situations, getting top minutes on both the PP and PK. Tied for second on the team in takeaways with Thomas Vanek, only two short of Ennis for the team lead.
Thumbs Down: Pominville’s point totals have decreased each of the last four seasons, from 80 to 66 to 62 and then 52 this year. That’s not a trend I hope he continues. Pommerdoodle took the second most shots on the team, but also missed the net quite a bit, fourth most among forwards. He’s a sniper in the purest sense — the guy has absolutely no moves to speak of and requires the help of his teammates to score. Went 0-for-4 in the shootout, partly because goalies figured out he always hoots five-hole, every time, without fail. C’mon man, even Vanek breaks out the around-the-world once a year.
Voting: On a scale of one to ten, one being the lowest and ten being the highest, grade Jason Pominville on his season according to the expectations you had for him. If he met them, give him a five or a six. If he eclipsed them, aim for a seven or beyond. If he failed to meet them, give him a lower number relating to how poorly he missed the target.
