Gorges and Kaleta out a while, Larsson recalled

Ted Nolan told media today that Josh Gorges and Patrick Kaleta both have lower-body injuries that will keep them out for a bit. Johan Larsson has been recalled from Rochester to fill in one spot, while Cody Hodgson also returns to the lineup to fill Drew Stafford ‘s spot.

Both Gorges and Kaleta have faced injuries already this season. Gorges injury sounds somewhat serious, as Nolan was uncommital on whether or not he’ll be able to return this season. The veteran defenseman has six assists in 46 games this season, and has struggled at points. It’s unknown whether this injury has been lingering, thus affecting his play.

Kaleta has been injured very frequently this season, but has been in the lineup for more than 20 games in a row. He had his knee surgically repaired and had issues with his sight after an eye injury after taking a slapshot to the face. He’s played in 33 games this season, totaling three assists.

Larsson has been up and down between Buffalo and Rochester this season. He’s played 11 games with the big club, netting one goal and one assist. He’s looked rather impressive with the Americans, getting 36 points in 40 games, but has been rather unnoticeable in the NHL this season. His last extended call-up ended with him being sent down in favor of Phil Varone.

Much of Larsson’s struggles could be related to him getting minutes with low quality team mates. His possession numbers have been good, but scoring on the fourth line (especially the Sabres fourth line) is tough to come by. Nolan didn’t do him any favors for tonight’s game, as it looks like he’ll be with Matt Ellis and Hodgson.
