Elimination round begins in the World Juniors

The round robin of the 2019 World Juniors has ended and the elimination round gets underway today.

All four Buffalo Sabres prospects will be playing in the quarterfinals today.

Denmark (A5) vs Kazakhstan (B5) – Relgation Round (best of three)

Denmark and Kazakhstan will play in the relegation round. Both teams finished last in their groups and the loser will be relegated down to the B-division next year.

Sweden (1B) vs Switzerland (4A) – 4 PM EST

The Swedes again went undefeated in the preliminary round en route to winning Group B. The Swiss are always a tough matchup, but Sweden should advance to the semifinals.

Canada (2A) vs Finland (3B) – 6:30 PM EST

The Canadians lost to Russia on New Years Eve and dropped to second in Group A. They’ll now be forced to matchup against Finland. The Finns beat Canada a few weeks ago in a pre-tournament game.

Sabres prospect Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen will be in goal for Finland. Oskari Laaksonen will look to continue to build on a strong showing to this point.

USA (2B) vs Czech Republic (3A) – 8 PM EST

Team USA avoided Canada with a 4-1 win over Finland on New Years Eve.

Sabres 2018 second-round pick Mattias Samuelsson has had a very up and down tournament. He particularly struggled against Sweden.

Also, 2019 NHL Draft top rated prospect Jack Hughes will return to the lineup for Team USA after missing three games due to injury.

Matej Pekar hasn’t done a lot for the Czech’s, but got an opportunity to play with one of the best players on the team in Martin Necas in their last game.

Russia (1A) vs Slovakia (4B) – 10:30 PM EST

The Russians haven’t looked great in the tournament, but got a surprise victory over Canada to win Group A. Now, they’ll get a better quarterfinal game against Slovakia.
