DBTB Open Thread – Week of 11/9

Calvin: What a time to be alive. Unseasonably decent weather in the northeast for the second week of November, and the Bills are flying.. they destroyed one of the best teams in the NFC and are such a joy to watch!

DBTB: Sir, this is a Wendy’s Sabres site.

Calvin: Sigh, I see.

Here’s an open thread for discussing all matters Buffalo Sabres and NHL related for this week. Of course, you can talk about anything else you like too, I insist.

While peripherally related to the world of hockey, we all mourn the death of ‘Jeopardy’ game show host Alex Trebek, who was also a big Ottawa Senators fan and even announced their draft pick during the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Canadian Howie Meeker also passed away over the weekend – the Toronto Maple Leafs player won the Stanley Cup before becoming renowned as a colorful TV analyst.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly is still saying that starting the new season on January 1st remains the objective, without adding more details.

Florida Panthers defenseman MacKenzie Weegar is a name that often pops up in trade chatter here on DBTB – the club have signed the RFA to a three-year deal with an AAV of $3.25 million.

The New York Rangers have avoided arbitration on a couple of players, signing Ryan Strome to a 2-year, $4.5 million AAV deal and Brendan Lemieux for two years at $1.55 millions AAV.

Dom Luszczyszyn over at The Athletic ranked every NHL team on their total contract efficiency – the Sabres were 22nd last year, and it didn’t get better this offseason. Jeff Skinner’s monster deal coupled with a nightmare season and Kyle Okposo’s contract albatross are already known, but the widely-panned contracts for Zemgus Girgensons and Cody Eakin have also come in for particular scrutiny.
