2009 – Cody McCormick (AHL) 17 12 29 -2 168

Introduction: Cody McCormick was signed in the offseason mainly as a role player for the Portland Pirates. From the Colorado Avalanche, McCormick was also brought in to add some spare intensity and an extra fighter if the team needed him. He was called up in the playoffs against the Boston Bruins and played three games for the Sabres. In those three games, he had 2 assists and 14 penalty minutes.

Voting: On a scale of one to ten, one being the lowest and ten being the highest, grade Cody McCormick on his season according to the expectations you had for him. If he met them, give him a five or a six. If he eclipsed them, aim for a seven or beyond. If he failed to meet them, give him a lower number relating to how poorly he missed the target.

Key Stat: McCormick’s 168 penalty minutes were third most in the AHL this season. In his five year NHL career, McCormick had 250 total penalty minutes.

Thumbs Up: McCormick added a level of intensity that seemed to be missing from the Sabres as they progressed into the playoffs. McCormick started in Game Four, a game that the Sabres lost in double overtime, and was one of the better players on the ice during the playoffs.

Thumbs Down: This was the first full season for McCormick in the AHL ever and his first appearance since the 2007-08 season. With the way the roster is now, McCormick may find himself a spot on the 2010-11 Sabres roster.

Talking Points: Will the Sabres resign McCormick again this season?
