Grading the Buffalo Sabres: Road trip the cure to growing pains?

The grades are in from the first week of action, and they didn’t make for good reading. We had a great poll turnout though with over 550 votes, and the three stars of the week were: Evander Kane (4.55), the penalty kill unit (4.18) and Jason Pominville (3.44). The negative grades were plentiful, and there were multiple candidates for the three goats of the week, but the trio that came in lowest were: Kyle Okposo (1.45), Matt Moulson (1.43) and the power play unit (1.42).

The Buffalo Sabres rough start to the season continued on the West Coast road trip with two straight losses before they finally broke the ‘duck’ in the wins column. Last night they mounted a furious comeback in Sin City to almost steal a win, but came away with a point.

Like last week, we’ve got all the forwards and defensemen who played over the past week in the grading.

Until I work out how to add more data to this, we’ll stick with Corsi For % as the advanced stat metric beyond just the goals, assists and +/-. For Phil Housley we also have the team’s overall Corsi For % as a measurable stat.

Rate the players’, PP, PK and coach’s performances for these games –

San Jose Sharks 3-2 Buffalo Sabres

Los Angeles Kings 4-2 Buffalo Sabres

Anaheim Ducks 1-3 Buffalo Sabres

Vegas Golden Knights 5-4 Buffalo Sabres (OT)
