BREAKING: Sabres, Penguins agree to trade

Reports from TSN indicate that the Buffalo Sabres have acquired forward Conor Sheary and defender Matt Hunwick from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

According to Bob McKenzie, the Penguins will receive a fourth round draft pick in 2019, which could conditionally become a third round pick. No details on the conditions are available at this time.

Sheary, who captained the UMass hockey team in 2013-14 was a star for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL, scoring 81 points (27G, 54A) in 90 games. In his 184 NHL contests, Sheary has contributed 93 points (48G, 45A). His $3 million cap hit was too much for Pittsburgh, but should not be a problem for a Buffalo team that has some space.

Journeyman Hunwick (117P, 25G, 92A) adds defensive depth to the Sabres’ roster, and could easily be a veteran presence for Rochester if he cannot find a spot in Buffalo’s lineup.

Details and analysis will follow this exciting announcement.
