So the Sabres have dealt Kane, haven’t moved Pouliot, and all else is quiet as of now… Have to wonder about depth D and goalies but man…
— Joe Yerdon (@JoeYerdon) February 26, 2018
3:20 PM EST
So no Buffalo.
Canadiens acquire defenseman Mike Reilly from the Minnesota Wild, in return for a 5th round pick in 2019 (previously acquired from Washington). #GoHabsGo

2:47 PM EST
Old friend Thomas Vanek is headed to Columbus. Still waiting on more Sabres news.
2:45 PM EST
15 minutes away.
2:36 PM EST
Seems like Buffalo took best deal with highest potential pick made available.
That condition tells me that it was the only form of a first round pick that was offered for Kane.

2:34 PM EST
Further details are coming out regarding the Kane / San Jose deal.
Here’s the condition of the first-round 2019 pick in the Evander Kane deal: if the Sharks re-sign Kane, it’s a first; but if Kane walks into free agency, it’s a second-round pick in 2019

50 minutes remain before the deadline is here – no Sabres updates.
2:00 PM EST
One hour left, no trades to speak of but time to tighten those seatbelts. Things are about to get crazy (we hope).
1:54 PM EST
Rumblings are now confirmed. Sabres looking to acquire a young defenseman.
As @CraigCustance has reported, #sabres one of the teams who have made an offer for Mike Reilly

1:51 PM EST
Arizona and Columbus made a very small minor league deal. That is how the day is progressing. One deal can change all of that.
1:47 PM EST
We’re pushing ever closer to the deadline. No movement yet, confirmation has come across that Kane’s suitors have jumped to five.

Appears the market is growing a little for Kane.
A 5th team… No formal offers. Still playing out. https://t.co/QUmmeh7QcE

1:26 PM EST
Tying up a loose end from earlier, Winnipeg Jets defenseman Toby Enstrom should be fine.
Stand down, Sabres trade seekers.
Paul Maurice says #NHLJets Tyler Myers (who didn’t skate) and a Toby Enstrom (who took a shot and left practice) are both fine for tomorrow vs #PredsNHL.#TSN1290Radio #TSNHockey

Updating an earlier report. No strong confirmation that Buffalo has sent an offer but where there is smoke, there usually is fire.
Wild sitting on a couple offers for defenseman Mike Reilly but nothing done there yet. No guarantee he’s moved.

12:49 PM EST
Trying to keep updates to at least every 10 minutes for y’all. No news on Buffalo.
12:39 PM EST
Might be OK to stand down on the Penguins goaltender front.
Per someone who was paying more attention to practice than myself, Murray left after a puck struck his mask.
— Seth Rorabaugh (@SethRorabaugh) February 26, 2018
12:36 PM EST
No Sabres-related update yet but something of potential interest.
- Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray left practice with an injury and is currently being evaluated.
- Winnipeg Jets defenseman Toby Enstrom blocked a shot in practice and needed to be helped off the ice. Enstrom appeared quite upset as he left the ice, as shown on TSN./
Buffalo has both defensemen and goaltenders available, as you might be aware of.

Still nothing from the Buffalo Sabres.
12:11 PM EST
The waiver dust has settled and Ryan Hartman is headed to Nashville. We are getting comfortable in our chairs again.

Our friends over at Matchsticks and Gasoline comment on the Flames / Kane rumors.
Insider Yost indicates Flames still talking shop with the Sabres of Buffalo. There’s a lot of possibilities here, but if it happens, say goodbye to one of the 4D prospects we’ve grown to love so dearly. https://t.co/TJWeGXP5fN

11:22 AM EST
Travis Yost reported on the Calgary Flames potential interest in Evander Kane yesterday. Looks like talks have continued there.
Think these conversations have continued in last 24 hours. Again, multiple names could be in play here.

An update from the AP’s John Wawrow.
Not sure where this Lehner has asked #Sabres for a trade talk is coming from.
It’s false.— John Wawrow (@john_wawrow) February 26, 2018
11:13 AM EST
TSN is currently discussing Evander Kane. WGR 550’s Brayton Wilson gave us the best round-up.
Darren Dreger on TSN just said that a hold up on the #Sabres trading Evander Kane is the asking price. Teams are interested, but it’s yet to be determined if anyone is offering a 1st round pick. Western teams are the ones more interested.
— Brayton J. Wilson (@BJWilsonWGR) February 26, 2018
11:08 AM EST
More on Lehner report.
More: This all stems from the lack of contract talks, and the fact that Lehner and his agent believe he’s done enough to earn a long-term deal. #Sabres https://t.co/JqjIeZhlhZ
— Mike Straw (@MikeStrawMedia) February 26, 2018
11:06 AM EST
Something to keep an eye on.

No trades to report – four hours remain until the deadline.
We are one hour away from finding out if Buffalo claimed any of the waived players from yesterday’s frantic barrage of moves.

This is what we at Die By The Blade get for riding out the trade deadline at our home offices.
#Sabres made a deal by acquiring Paula’s Donuts for the gathered media.

10:50 AM EST
No early peeks at potential changes for the Sabres.
Reminder that #Sabres have a CBA off day today. So no watching practice and seeing if somebody gets called off the ice.

While we wait for trades (and lunch time), Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News gives us a good thought to chew on.
Other thing to ponder today for #Sabres: Assuming they trade Kane and Pouliot and with CJ Smith injured, who the heck plays left wing Wednesday in Tampa? Need bodies.

9:57 AM EST
Craig Custance of The Athletic reports that Buffalo could be hot on the trail of Minnesota Wild defenseman Mike Reilly. Minnesota “would like to replenish some of the draft picks that have exited the franchise via trade over the past couple years.”
9:49 AM EST
After sounding the panic alarm throughout Buffalo, John Shannon goes further on his Evander Kane point from earlier.
There is still an expectation that he will be dealt…but the price won’t be as high as expected. https://t.co/zaBmdiu5HV

9:16 AM EST
Reminder: if you see any current Sabres sent down today, remember that it is likely a paper move (unless otherwise stated). While Buffalo doesn’t have much of a shot this year, Rochester still has a very good chance of making the AHL playoffs.
Reminder: A player must be on an @TheAHL roster at 3 ET today in order to be eligible to be sent down from the NHL any time thereafter for the rest of the season. #NHLTradeDeadline

9:12 AM EST
NHL Network’s EJ Hradek chimes in with his latest thoughts on a potential Evander Kane deal.
.@EJHradek_NHL just now on WGR: I could see a scenario where Evander Kane doesn’t get moved today. The #Sabres aren’t going to give him away for nothing.

A break in the action means we’ve got ourselves another cup of coffee!
No Sabres update at this point – Trade Deadline day is still ice cold.
8:41 AM EST
We have our first rumblings of Evander Kane not moving today.
— One- Buffalo (@scott_lasker) February 26, 2018
8:37 AM EST
While we aren’t anticipating a Victor Antipin trade, we have a bit of an update on a potential market for his services.
As far as I am aware there are at least two more teams that have expressed interest. https://t.co/EqEiu6Qyv3
— Aivis Kalniņš (@A_Kalnins) February 26, 2018
Paul Hamilton of WGR 550 did also state on air that he would be surprised to see Antipin moved. Hamilton feels the organization values Antipin.
8:30 AM EST

Are the Sabres going to be able to trade Kane today? Has GMBot set the price too high? Will he have to cave in for less?
7:30 AM EST
All is quiet as everyone looks to be getting their first cups of coffee in for the day. TSN and Sportsnet’s individual coverages of the Trade Deadline begin in less than 60 minutes. Get ready for some trades!
Will the Sabres trade Evander Kane today?
Yes – 1st Rd pick & more (a la Nash) | 130 |
Yes – 2nd Rd pick & more (a la Grabner) | 116 |
No – price is set too high | 62 |
No – GMBot plans to re-sign him | 15 |

NHL Trade Deadline 2018 – Trade Tracker
What To Look Out For
Evander Kane has been linked with a trade all season long – we’ve heard rumours that GMBot was asking for too much for him, and that the market is now flooded with forwards – let’s see if the Sabres were right to hold on to their cards.
Veteran defenseman Josh Gorges has also been mentioned, likely he’ll go to a contender for future considerations. Zemgus Girgensons certainly bears the haunted look of a man who needs a fresh start elsewhere – will he get it?
And then there’s the question of enigmatic goaltender Robin Lehner – will GMBot try to regain some value for the Swede, or is he going to remain a Sabre?
Considering how awful they have been this season, we can expect the Buffalo Sabres to be sellers on the NHL’s Trade Deadline day today. Only problem is, what do we have on this roster that is worth anything?
That is the question General Manager Jason Botterill and Head Coach Phil Housley will be looking to answer and more in their first trade deadline with the Sabres.
