World Cup of Hockey Open Thread 9/22/2016

Another Team North America game, another night of thrilling hockey. The youngsters failed to put away Team Sweden in regulation time, thereby putting their fate in the hands of Team Russia who play this afternoon. Since the first tiebreaker remains head-to-head result, any kind of win for the Red Machine today eliminates the Under-23s from the semi-finals.

In the other game of the day, Team Canada beat Team Europe emphatically 4-1 to seal top spot in Group A. That sets up a heavyweight semis clash against either North America or Russia on Saturday evening, while Europe play Sweden on Sunday afternoon in the other semi.

In today’s afternoon game, Team Finland will be playing for pride, and probably everyone but Russia will be rooting for them to ensure North America goes through. The evening game features Team USA against Czech Republic in a dead rubber tilt where both sides will be attempting to avoid the ignominy of finishing last.
