The Best Of Jeanneret: (1) Top Shelf vs. (2) La-la-la-la-la-la-LaFontaine

The Best of Rick Jeanneret is our summer quest to determine which of Jeanneret’s most memorable calls ranks as the greatest of all time by ranking and voting on 16 of the best.

Top Shelf, Where Momma Hides The Cookies

Of all of Rick Jeanneret’s calls, perhaps none are more universal than “Top shelf, where momma hides the cookies!” It’s unclear where this catchphrase started, but Sabres fans have been hearing it for years, and it’s even made its way into the popular hockey lexicon.

There’s not a Sabres fan alive that didn’t announce many a street hockey goal with this very phrase, and it’s one that is bored into our collective Buffalo consciousness.

La-la-la-la-la-la-LaFontaine

This call doesn’t really need any introduction, mostly because I’m not sure anybody’s sure how it started. But you can bet that anytime Pat LaFontaine put one in the back of the net, you’d hear Jeanneret’s voice ring out with a “La-la-la-la-la-la-LaFontaine!!” It even spawned a special holiday version, one that get replayed every Christmas – “‘Tis the season, Fa-la-la-la-la-la-LaFontaine!”
