They rallied, but lost in the end.
Score: Sabres 2, Hurricanes 3 (OT)
Shots: BUF 22, CAR 27
Buffalo Sabres Goals: Alex Tuch (4), Rasmus Dahlin (3)
Carolina Hurricanes Goals: Tony DeAngelo (1), Brady Skjei (2), Martin Necas (5)
Plus 1/Minus 1: The Power Play
As of writing, the Sabres’ power play is sixth-worst in the NHL. The Sabres are 11.4 percent on the power play this season, having scored just four goals on 35 opportunities. The good news, Tuesday night, at least, was that the Sabres did score on the advantage. Dahlin’s goalie was a thing of beauty.
Unfortunately, the Sabres did fail to take advantage of a late power play with under four to play in a tied game. This was a prime opportunity for them to take their first lead of the night, in the final minutes, and they failed. We know what happened next. (They also failed to capitalize on two first-period power plays.)
Plus 1/Minus 1: Boot & Rally
You take the good with the bad sometimes. The Sabres fell behind twice on Tuesday – obviously not ideal. But, on the the flip side, they did manage to rally back twice, too, and in a building they’ve historically not had much luck in. The Sabres haven’t won in Carolina since 2016, and unfortunately, that streak continues. But again: they got a point, which is better than nothing.
Final Thoughts
Time to put this one aside and focus on the next two games ahead. The Sabres have a few days of rest before a back-to-back this weekend. The Wild are in town Friday for a Hockey Fights Cancer game, before the Sabres travel to Pittsburgh Saturday night. (Good news: the Pens will be coming off a West Coast trip, and they’re also currently last in the Metropolitan Division.)
