The Buffalo Sabres announced Tuesday afternoon that they have assigned goaltender Devon Levi to the AHL’s Rochester Americans, alleviating the team’s three-goalie carousel, at least for the time being.

Levi, 21, could greatly benefit from some time in the AHL. After an outstanding, albeit brief, start in the NHL at the end of last season, he’s looked a bit out of place this year with a record of 3-4-1, a .876 save percentage and 3.73 GAA. The Sabres were riding him hard at the beginning of the season before he missed a few games due to injury. He’s never played a game in the AHL, having come straight from college to the NHL, and that’s not an easy jump for anyone to make – even if they are a superstar goalie in the making.

With Levi in Rochester, the Sabres are left with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Eric Comrie in net. Luukkonen has appeared in 11 games this season, starting nine, and has a 6-3-1 record with a .918 save percentage and 2.54 GAA. Comrie has appeared in five games and is 1-3-0 with a .876 save percentage and 3.45 GAA.

Upcoming games for the Sabres include Thursday in St. Louis, Saturday in Carolina and Sunday at home against Nashville.

In addition to Levi, the Amerks have Dustin Tokarski and Devin Cooley on their active roster. Tokarski has a 4-2-1 record with a .893 GAA and 3.67 GAA. Cooley is also 4-2-1 with a .886 GAA and 4.04 GAA.

Upcoming games for the Amerks include Friday and Saturday in Belleville. The team returns home on December 8 to host the Charlotte Checkers.
