Plus-1: Jimmy Vesey Turning a Corner?
During the first period, Vesey had a few looks, but it was in the second period that he was able to bury a beautiful short-handed goal just inside the goal post while killing the penalty on Marcus Johansson. Vesey had some help, though, from a quick deflection off of Rasmus Asplund’s stick in the Calgary zone to give him the puck and tie up the game. It would also be Asplund’s first NHL point.
Perhaps fans will continue to see more from Vesey as he is finally contributing to the Sabres’ scoreboard these last few games.
Plus-2: They’re Going Streaking
It was a good night for captain Jack and Victor Olofsson, who are both on two different point streaks at the moment. Eichel at seven games with 12 points and Olofsson at five games with five points. Olofsson buried a goal again tonight with assists from Eichel and Sam Reinhart in the third period.
Minus-1: Skinner on the Third Line
Yes, you read that correctly. While it is clear that head coach Ralph Krueger has been testing lines and moving things around to respond to several injuries, in what world does this make sense? While Jeff Skinner did produce a few good scoring opportunities throughout the game and drew a penalty, it is hard to believe that Johan Larsson and Conor Sheary will be the best linemates to help perpetuate any long-term scoring with the second highest paid player on the team.
Final Thoughts
While the Sabres and Flames were evenly matched tonight, it was a disappointing night for Buffalo, who made very few mistakes. Back and forth scoring had fans thinking the home team would come out on top, but the Sabres simply could not finish with the two points they should have claimed on home ice. All too often, the Sabres are finding ways to create opportunities and win battles, but then struggle to finish out games with a regulation win. They are 3-9-3 in their last 15 games.
Buffalo’s next game is Friday against the Toronto Maple Leafs at home. Puck drop is at 4:00 PM. and
