Recap: Sabres give up three in the third, lose 4-1 to Blues

Things were going fine, until they weren’t.

The Sabres opened the scoring last night with a quick Sam Reinhart power play goal, his third of the year. But then they gave up the lead just as quickly thanks to a silly too many men penalty, and St. Louis scored an even faster power play goal to tie the game.

Being tied on the road after 40 minutes is usually pretty good, especially for the Sabres, but giving up three third period goals, including two in about the first two minutes, is not.

Things were going fine, until they weren’t, and the Buffalo Sabres ended up dropping their fifth game in a row, this time to the St. Louis Blues and by a score of 4-1.

I’m going to steal a line from Rob Ray’s appearance yesterday afternoon on WGR 550 when he said, “This team has to play a perfect game to win.” With injuries to their two most talented players and a lack of scoring depth, the Sabres margin for error is razor thin. At this point, it seems like they need a shutout from their goaltender to have a chance, and that’s even considering they’ve gotten good good-to-great goaltending most nights this year.

Puck luck certainly isn’t helping any, with the Sabres clanging multiple posts tonight and catching some bad breaks on the ice, but as the old saying goes, good teams make their own luck, and right now, nothing the Sabres have is any good.

Two Questions

1. Will the Sabres continue to struggle against St. Louis?

Yep.

2. Can the injury reinforcements contribute in any significant way tonight?

Nope.

Comment of the Game

This is the same feeling I felt that time I tried to drive work and then my car was instead stolen, so I just went back to bed.
