It’s truly amazing how the Buffalo Sabres continue to find new and interesting ways to lose hockey games. Their losing streak now stands at 11 after last night’s 6-4 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
So how did they manage to do it last night? Buffalo jumped out to a three goal lead in the first period thanks to Drew Stafford, Tyler Ennis, and Chris Stewart (on the power play) and Sabres fans were thinking that this might be the one. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then, right?
But three equally quick goals by Detroit in the second period quickly doomed those hopes. Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar, and Drew Miller were the goal scorers, and the two teams were tied at the after two.
Keeping up the pattern in the third, Detroit scored three more times – a hat trick by Henrik Zetterberg – while the Sabres added just one more goal by Tyler Ennis to make the final score 6-4.
Tyler Ennis called the first period “Our best of the year,” and he’s not wrong. However, like so many games this season, the Sabres just couldn’t put together a full 60 minute effort. A three goal lead after the first period is a pretty darn good setup, and if there was any game to snap the streak, this one should have been it. But maybe Tuesday night against Calgary will provide different results.
