If you’re a dog lover, the word “woof”generally brings about positive feelings, of love, companionship, and happiness.

If you’re a Buffalo Sabres fan, the word “woof” generally describes the second period.

The Sabres absolutely bombed period two against the Carolina Hurricanes, letting in three goals in seven minutes leading to a 5-2 loss to Carolina, who sweeps the season series against Buffalo.

The Sabres second period was one of the worst we’ve seen in years – and I’m including the tank years in that sentence – salvaged only by Brian Gionta scoring the team’s first shorthanded goal of the season.

Aside from that, the Sabres looked like your average JV squad for at least ten minutes, and let in three goals against – the first which was a softy that Anders Nilsson has to stop – and dug themselves a hole which they had no chance of escaping from.

The game started with a Sabres goal, thanks to some nice work by Ryan O’Reilly, who fed Will Carrier for a tap-in goal just five minutes in.

But despite a strong first period effort, the Sabres couldn’t capitalize on a number of quality chances, and went into the break up just 1-0.

And it was all downhill from there.

This team continues to remain so hot and cold. It seems like one week, they get 7 of 8 points and we’re all thinking that they could sneak back into the playoff race with just a few more wins. And then the next week, they lose three of four and have us all cursing the sports gods who look down upon Buffalo.

Rinse, and repeat. Rinse, and repeat.

If the Sabres are ever going to elevate themselves to real playoff contenders this year, they have to start winning games against these teams like Carolina and Tamp Bay that are ahead of them in the standings. Their failure to do so for much of the year is the reason why Sabres fans are yet again looking up at 8th place.

Three Questions

1. How will special teams play out tonight?

The Sabres didn’t score on either of their two power plays, but held the Canes without a goal on four chances of theirs. I’d say that’s a win.

2. Will we see Linus Ullmark in net tonight?

No, we saw Anders Nilsson again tonight.

3. Can the Sabres hang in third period?

Lol.
