Recap: Sabres fall flat in Florida, lose 3-0

The Buffalo Sabres are ending their season with a weekend road trip in Florida, and if their first game last night is any indication, this season will be going out with a whimper rather than a bang.

The Sabres couldn’t put any of their 30 shots past James Reimer, and Jonathan Huberdeau scored two goals as Florida snapped a six-game losing streak to take down the Sabres 3-0.

After a scoreless first period, the Panthers opened things up on a shot that snuck through Robin Lehner’s short side which ended up being the game winner. A power play goal in the second would all but seal the deal, as the Sabres – who were down 2-0 going in – were outshot in the third period by a 15 to 7 margin.

Just playing out the string, I suppose.

If there was any good news from tonight, it’s that Florida passed Buffalo for sixth place in the division. The Sabres now sit in 25th place, and could finish the season in 26th with a loss to Tampa Bay and a Detroit victory over New Jersey.

Two Questions

1. How will Sean Malone look in his NHL debut?

Not bad. Malone played just over 12 minutes, registered one shot one goal, and looked good on faceoffs. True to his scouting report, he has a good game on the boards, and is a hard worker in both ends.

2. Will either of these teams show any end-of-the-year fatigue?

Yes, the team that rhymes with “Shmuffalo” laid a decently-sized egg.

Comment of the Game

Fan appreciation night in Florida just means they clean all the empty seats and give them a nice coat of wax
