With most hockey teams, a 4-2 lead in the third period is solid enough for you to turn off the TV, confident in that team’s ability to close out their win.
With the Buffalo Sabres, a two-goal lead in the third period makes you want to turn off the TV, but for completely different reasons.
For the second night in a row, the Sabres blew a third period lead, and ended up losing to the Nashville Predators 5-4 in overtime.
The term loser point has never been so appropriate.
It was Filip Forsberg who dominated Buffalo in the final ten minutes, earning an assist and scoring the tying and game-winning goals in the last three minutes of regulation and overtime, respectively.
“At the end of the day we gave up five goals. That’s a team thing. That’s not just a goaltender thing. It’s too many goals to be giving up to think you’re going to win a hockey game,” said head coach/Captain Obvious Dan Bylsma.
If you want to put yourself through the punishment of experiencing this game, there were Sabres goals from Gionta, Okposo, Kane, and McCabe, while the Nashville goals came from Fisher, Wilson, Johanson, and Forsberg x2. But I’d recommend something less frustrating, like watching every Sean Spicer press conference in a row on repeat.
What can you say after three devastating losses in a row except: bring on the trade deadline, and let’s finally blow this thing up.

1. What’s going on in net tonight?
Robin Lehner played tonight, and he was…not great. The highlight of his night was making a poor decision to react to a weird bounce that gave Mike Fisher a short breakaway by coming waaaaay out of the net to challenge. It did not go well.
2. Can anyone stop Jack Eichel or Filip Forsberg?
Jack Eichel earned an assist tonight, keeping his nice little point streak going. But Filip Forsberg has been the best player in the NHL over the past two weeks, and earned two goals and three points total tonight. Dude is legit.
3. Will anyone get traded before the game starts?
Sorry Dan Catenacci, you don’t count. Hopefully this game pushes Tim Murray to do something tomorrow.
