It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the hockey game of wisdom, it was the hockey game of foolishness. It was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness. It was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. We had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.
Fun Fact: I used “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens in almost every English essay in 11th and 12th grade, and it worked beautifully – because that book has everything. Great prose, characters, tragedy, comedy, and most importantly, the duality of two men who look similar, but lead very different lives.
And here we are, with the 2016-17 Buffalo Sabres. A team that has given us both the best of times and the worst of times, often in the same game.
That was the case last night, as the Sabres looked like world beaters, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, before crumbling in the end and losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3.
If you want the best of times, O’Reilly, Gionta, and Eichel all scored in the first period, thanks to 21 shots on goal.
And to their credit, the Sabres didn’t entirely let their foot off the pedal after one period. Yes, they were a bit less physical, and they played horrible defense at times (which should come as no surprise to anyone who’s watched this team) but they still managed 28 shots to Pittsburgh’s 32 over the final two frames.
But penalties and poor coverage ruined what should have been a walk in the park. for the Sabres. The old phrase goes, “ A two-goal lead is the worst lead in hockey,” but with the Sabres, that should be a three-goal lead.
