Recap: Sabres start the preseason with a win over the Blue Jackets

The Buffalo Sabres kicked off their preseason schedule tonight with a visit to Columbus to face the Blue Jackets. Both teams featured lineups that did not include a lot of NHL players.

Not a lot happened in the first period. It felt more like a feeling out period between the two clubs. The Blue Jackets had a few chances, but Linus Ullmark was up to the challenge. The period ended with neither team registering a goal.

The Sabres got on the board early in the second period. Alex Nylander made a nice pass to Patrik Berglund and he rifled a shot by the Jackets goaltender.

Nylander picked up his second assist of the game just a few minutes later with the man advantage. He put the puck on a tee for Nathan Beaulieu and he put the Sabres ahead 2-0.

Just eight seconds later, the Blue Jackets got back within one thanks to David Savard. The Sabres would add one more near the end of the period. Sean Malone battled hard or the puck down low and fed Kyle Criscuolo out front to make it 3-1 in favor of the Sabres after 40 minutes.

Early in the third the Sabres would add to their lead on a goal from Andrew Oglevie. The undrafted free agent finished off a nice shift by cleaning up a rebound to make it 4-1.

The game would end by that very score as the Sabres pick up their first win of the preseason. A lot of big names will be in action tomorrow night for the Sabres when the Pittsburgh Penguins visit KeyBank Center.
