World Cup of Hockey Open Thread 9/20/2016

There will be two big time rivalries on display at the World Cup of Hockey today, both bitter feuds from the past that will get carried onto a new stage.

There is no love lost between Sweden and Finland in the world of hockey, and another loss for the Finns will put them out of the competition. Expect Rasmus Ristolainen of the Buffalo Sabres and his cohorts to throw everything they have at the Swedes this afternoon.

Team USA is also in a similar do-or-die situation, and will go up against old nemesis Team Canada, in Toronto. Where better for Daniel to take on the lion than in his own lair, one supposes.

Last night saw Team Europe virtually book their spot in the semis with a win over Team Czech Republic. Then the later game was an instant classic. Team North America jumped out into the lead against Team Russia, and it looked like the youngsters would blow them away. Instead, in an inspired five-minute spell the Red Machine scored four times to turn the game on its head. Despite a rip-roaring comeback attempt from the kids, the Russians prevailed 4-3 in a great advertisement for the sport.
