Game Four: Sabres v. Flyers – Scoring Chances

The Sabres got exactly what they wanted which was to tie the series at two games apiece. Ryan Miller played the role of hero once again making save after save. The save of the game came when Miller robbed Daniel Briere who was all alone in front of the net after a giveaway at the blue line by Paul Gaustad.

There is still plenty of room for improvement for the Sabres but they now face a best-of-three series to see which team will advance to the second round. The Sabres power play continued to struggle on home ice and that was clearly evident when the Sabres managed only two shots on a five minute power play to start the third period.

Still there were some positives that came out of this game. Tyler Myers matured before our eyes with his strongest game of the series. He was physical in almost every situation and he made an all important save in the first period when Miller was down on the opposite side of the crease.

The hatred has been building throughout the series and it eventually came to a head at the end of this contest. Nathan Gerbe has been a pest all series and Kimmo Timonen took out his frustration with a stick to the unmentionables after the final horn.

Game Five should be another fun one.

Unfortunately the script is still not working properly but I’ll do my best to give you the scoring chances in this contest.

Late in the season we started a feature that tracked scoring chances. I’ve decided to continue doing the scoring chances post because many people like to track it. While this is a very subjective stat and is based mostly on my own opinion, I did use a criteria courtesy of The Copper and Blue. (Editors Note – The stats posted may not be entirely accurate due to distractions like drinking beer and yelling at the TV)

Here is the definition of a scoring chance via Copper and Blue…

a scoring chance is defined as a clear play directed toward the opposing net from a dangerous scoring area – loosely defined as the top of the circle in and inside the faceoff dots, though sometimes slightly more generous than that depending on the amount of immediately-preceding puck movement or screens in front of the net. Blocked shots are generally not included but missed shots are. A player is awarded a scoring chance anytime he is on the ice and someone from either team has a chance to score. He is awarded a “chance for” if someone on his team has a chance to score and a “chance against” if the opposing team has a chance to score.

Like many others that are using the app, a special thanks to Vic Ferrari for his hard work in creating this and many other apps.

This charts the chances for each team by period and by situation. Because we are tracking the numbers for the Sabres, they will be listed first and the opponent listed second.
