The Top 25 Under 25 is a collaboration by members of the Die By The Blade community. six writers and 718 readers ranked players under the age of 25 as of July 1, 2018 in the Buffalo Sabres organization. Each participant used their own metric of current ability and production against future projection to rank each player. Now, we’ll count down each of the 25 players ranked.
With 64 points in 67 games played last season, Jack Eichel did not disappoint. Now, with an improved supporting cast in the top six, Eichel and the Sabres are looking to have a breakout year.
Between his speed, hands and shot, Eichel is a threat as soon as he steps onto the ice. He makes the toughest plays look easy and his brilliant hockey mind shines in clutch moments.
While Eichel may be considered a proven player, he is also on the rise in terms of point production as well. His first three seasons in the NHL have seen an increase in his point per game each year. Starting at a nice .69 in 2015-2016, followed by .93 the next year, and finally a .95 last year in his 67 game season.
Sabres fans have seen what he can do offensively and on the back check as well. There is no question that Eichel is a top talent and a cornerstone for this team. The checklist for Eichel this year, though, should include keeping his point per game numbers consistent while also using his brand new teammates in Conor Sheary and Jeff Skinner to increase the team’s offensive production far beyond where it was last season.
With a full season of Jack Eichel next year, the Sabres could see themselves in a position to rise from the basement and finally play competitive hockey once again.
There should be no rush from Buffalo, though. After all, Eichel is only turning 22 this October.
