Sabres Sign Defenseman Will Borgen

The Buffalo Sabres signed 2015 fourth round pick defenseman Will Borgen to an entry-level contract. He’ll report to Rochester to play with the Amerks for the Calder Cup Playoffs.

The 21-year-old defender was drafted 92nd overall in the 2015 NHL draft. He’s developed very well playing at St. Cloud University. The Huskies went into the NCAA tournament as the top seed but were eliminated Friday by Air Force in the first round.

Borgen had two goals and 15 points in 36 games this season. He was also named defensive defenseman of the year in NCHC this season. He was also selected to the USA Olympic team but did not play any games in the tournament.

He’s not going to bring a lot of offense from the blue line but is a solid puck mover. Borgen is also very reliable in his own end of the ice.

He’ll be a huge boost for the Amerks who just clinched a playoff spot last season. Borgen’s teammate and 2012 seventh round pick for the Sabres Judd Peterson signed an amateur tryout with the Amerks as well.
