Buffalo Sabres Select Maxim Štrbák

With their second pick of the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft – and the 45th overall pick – the Buffalo Sabres selected Slovakian defenseman Maxim Štrbák.

The 18-year-old, right-handed defender hails from Kosice, Slovakia. He’s listed at 6’2″ and 198 pounds. He was ranked #78 by Elite Prospects, #59 by FC Hockey, #53 by Daily Faceoff, and #48 by NHL Central Scouting among North American skaters.

Štrbák made the jump to North America this past season, suiting up with the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede. He appeared in 46 games, scoring five goals and adding 13 assists. He also had 51 penalty minutes. In addition, he captained Slovakia’s team at the U18 World Championships and had six assists in seven games. He also represented Slovakia at the World Juniors, adding three points in five games.

Štrbák is committed to Michigan State this fall.

DBTB reader bdn00707 had the Sabres taking him at #39, so not too far off. Here’s what they had to say:

“Physical, imposing RHD. Does his best work in the defensive zone in front of the net. Fills a need for the Sabres as they need more defensive defenseman in both AHL and NHL. Could partner Power or Dahlin in 3/4 years.”
