Sabres sign Casey Fitzgerald to an entry-level contract

The Buffalo Sabres announced this evening they’ve signed 2016 third-round pick Casey Fitzgerald to a two-year, entry-level contract. The 22-year-old will sign an amateur try out contract with the Rochester Americans and report to the AHL for the remainder of the season. His entry-level deal with the Sabres will kick in next season.

Fitzgerald was part of the final Tim Murray draft and was selected 86th overall by the club in the 2016 NHL Draft. He just finish his senior season at Boston College where he recorded two goals and 14 points in 39 games. He also served as the captain of the Eagles for the past two seasons

The right-shot defenseman will give some much needed depth to the organization. He didn’t have an overly impressive NCAA career, therefore, we’ll see what kind of professional player he turns into. He’s not going to be a point producer, but could be a nice stay at home defender similar to Will Borgen.

He could be a nice jolt for the Amerks that are currently running low on blueliners with the Sabres recalling Lawrence Pilut and Borgen in the last few days. They’re also with Zach Redmond due to injury.
