Sabres Recall Defenseman Casey Nelson

The Buffalo Sabres announced this morning they’ve recalled defenseman Casey Nelson from the Rochester Americans. The 25-year-old blueliner has two goals and 11 points in 37 games for the Amerks this season.

Nelson was signed as an undrafted free agent from Minnesota State University in 2016. He’s played 11 career games with the Sabres over the last two years and has recorded four points over that time.

The Sabres defense is down two players with Zach Bogosian out four to six weeks and Nathan Beaulieu is ill again. He is listed as day to day.

We’ll see if Nelson gets playing time tomorrow against the New York Rangers. The Sabres still have six healthy defensemen with Rasmus Ristolainen, Josh Gorges, Justin Falk, Marco Scandella, Victor Antipin and Jake McCabe.

Also, Brendan Guhle was not recalled because he’s battling an injury as well. He left Amerks practice early yesterday and is currently listed as day to day. The Amerks called up defenseman Eric Knodel from the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL to replace the loss of Guhle and Nelson.
