Sabres to play Rangers in 2018 Winter Classic

The NHL have announced that the 2018 Winter Classic will feature the New York Rangers and the Buffalo Sabres, with the game to be played on the afternoon of the 1st of January, 2018 at Citi Field in New York City.

The home of the New York Mets will be host to the Sabres’ second Winter Classic appearance, after the first in this current series of events was held in Buffalo’s then-named Ralph Wilson Stadium back in 2008.

Oddly enough, Buffalo will technically be the hosts for the 10th Winter Classic as the Rangers have some complicated regulations regarding their playing all their home games at Madison Square Garden.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement last night during an intermission last night as the Rangers were knocked out of this season’s Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Ottawa Senators in a 4-2 series loss.

This will be the Rangers’ fourth outdoor NHL game appearance, having previously featured in 2012 in Philadelphia and in the Stadium Series games against the Devils and Islanders in 2014 at the Yankee Stadium.
