Victor Olofsson Named NHL Rookie of the Month

On Thursday afternoon, the National Hockey League named forward Victor Olofsson as the league’s Rookie of the Month for December.

In 14 December games, Victor Olofsson led all NHL rookies in goals, points, power-play goals, power-play points and game-winning goals.

Olofsson’s six goals and 14 points in December pushed his season total to 16 goals, 18 assists and 34 points.

With his 14 points in the month, Olofsson became the first Sabres rookie with 14 or more points in a calendar month since Tyler Myers (14 points) did it back in March 2010.

Averaging one point per game played, Olofsson is the third Sabres rookie in the past 27 years to average at least one point-per-game in a calendar month – min. 10 games played. Marcus Foligno (1.00 P/GP in March 2012) and Richard Smehlik (1.17 P/GP in December 1992) are the other two other Sabres to accomplish this feat.

According to the NHL, Olofsson beat out fellow rookies Nick Suzuki, Alexandre Texier, Dominik Kubalik, Carson Soucy, Filip Zadina and Ilya Samsonov for the honor.

Olofsson becomes the first rookie this season to win the award twice. November’s honors were taken by Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar.
