10 Moments to Remember from the 2022-23 Sabres Season, Part I

As we reflect back on the 2022-23 Buffalo Sabres season, there are a handful of moments that stand out as memorable. Check out part one of my list below, then share your thoughts in the comments.

(These are listed in chronological order.)

November 23, 2022: Return of the Goathead

To the delight of many, the Sabres brought back (a slightly restyled version of) the black and red goathead jerseys. After the official reveal in early November, the team first hit the ice in the new jersey on November 23 against the St. Louis Blues. Love it or hate it, the goathead became legendary in its first run, and with how well the Sabres performed while wearing it this season, it’s still legendary. There’s just something about it – as Rasmus Dahlin said, they feel “evil” when wearing it.

December 5, 2022: Dahlin Flattes Nieto

Rasmus Dahlin laid out the hit of the season on San Jose Sharks forward Matt Nieto. The Sabres also won this game 6-3, powered by goals from Tage Thompson, JJ Peterka, Jeff Skinner, Jack Quinn (two) and an empty-netter by Alex Tuch. UPL had 26 saves.

December 7, 2022: Thompson Scores Five

We already knew that Tage Thompson was developing into something special, but there is no better game this season to showcase his offensive strength than the 9-4 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Thompson scored four times in the first period, then added a fifth goal in the second period. He became just the second player in Sabres history to score five goals in a game, joining Dave Andreychuk (1986).

December 31, 2022: A Six-Game Streak

Alex Tuch’s overtime goal sent the Sabres to a 4-3 win over the Bruins, capping off a six-game winning streak by Buffalo. The goal finished a four-point night for Tuch, and perhaps even more impressively, it was just the third home loss of the season for Boston. A team that seemed to be an impenetrable brick wall at home had been toppled. The Sabres were on a roll; they knew this game would be a challenge, and they were up for it. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen also had 37 saves.

January 3, 2023: A Night Of Threes

Just one day after Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during a Buffalo Bills game, the Sabres had a really touching and big win that was filled with symbols – if you’re into that sort of thing. Tage Thompson scored his third goal of the game, and 30th goal of the season, exactly three minutes into overtime as the Sabres beat the Caps 5-4. (Three, of course, is Hamlin’s jersey number with the Bills.) The entire Sabres team also wore special shirts entering the arena, and the Caps held a pregame moment of silence.
