Sabres vs. Maple Leafs Recap: Sabres Get The Loser Point In Shootout Loss

Tonight’s contest features two teams in free fall, both inevitably sinking to the bottom for the rest of the year. Sometimes that can result in a really fun, sloppy hockey game, but other times it can be a snooze-fest.

That quote comes from our very own Andy Boron in today’s preview. For 20 minutes, the Sabres and Leafs appeared to be on their way to a full on boat race, with both teams scoring twice in the opening period. But, offensively struggling teams will struggle and the last 40 minutes saw a total of two goals on the way to a shootout. The Leafs ended up with two points, but the Sabres walked away with the charity point and now sit three points ahead of the Edmonton Oilers and six ahead of Arizona.

Three Questions Answered

1.) What the heck will this game look like?

As mentioned earlier, this game appeared to be an entertaining game between two teams that just can’t seem to not give up a ton of scoring chances. Those scoring chances slowed down though as the game continued and the Sabres gave up the lead they held with 3:25 left in the third period on a Tyler Bozak power play goal.

2.) How will Johan Larsson perform as the #1 center?

The best thing that can be taken away from this game was the play of the Tyler Ennis/Johan Larsson/Matt Moulson line. That line accounted for all three of the Sabres goals and all nine of the Sabres points. Each player finished with one goal and two assists. A lot of that play was led by the new number one center who played a total of 18:05, which was the leader among forwards, and had two shots on goal.

3.) Who gets the call in net and how will they perform?

Anders Lindback gets the call again after making a relief appearance on Saturday night. Lindback finished the night with 31 saves on 34 shots and made a game saving save in overtime on a Leo Komarov tip in front of the net.

Comment of the Night

So that’s what having a guy who can play center means to a team?
Been so long, I forgot.
