The Buffalo Sabres have now lost ten hockey games in a row, and they’ve done it in quite a number of ways. There have been blowouts, snoozers, and a few games like last night, where the Sabres gave a solid effort, came close, and just couldn’t find enough to seal the deal in the third period.
Things started off well for Buffalo, and they actually scored the first goal courtesy of Zemgus Girgensons, and outshot the Flyers 8-7. This must be what good teams feel like! But things quickly deteriorated in the second period, as the Sabres god-awful penalty kill came back to bite them. RJ Umberger and Mark Streit both scored with the man advantage four minutes apart, and the Flyers would hold the 2-1 lead until the final minute of the period, when Tyler Ennis tied it up.
The third period belonged to the Flyers, as they scored twice to take a lead that the Sabres would not overcome, despite another goal from Zemgus Girgensons on the power play with just over a minute left.
The Sabres continue to set new team records every game, last night with their tenth straight loss. However, at least the team was competitive in this one. Girgensons, the man who scored twice, said, “I think we gave a way better effort. We worked way harder. We wanted this one, it’s just we made mistakes that shouldn’t have been made.”
There’s not much time to wallow in sadness as the Sabres travel to Detroit to take on the Red Wings tonight at 8pm EST.
