Sabres vs. Flames recap: Defying gravity

One of my favorite recurring jokes in Muppet movies happens every time an aggressive woman (usually Miss Piggy) beats up some unsuspecting men, and her bewildered companions wonder:

How does she do that?

The Buffalo Sabres continued winning streak has me wondering the exact same thing – how are they doing this?

The Sabres took down the Calgary Flames despite being outshot by a massive 45-19 margin; it’s like they’re trying to defy the notion of advanced stats on purpose, making their degree of difficulty in these wins harder and harder. They gave the Flames four power plays while only receiving two themselves, couldn’t get one shot on net during their man advantages, and had twice as many giveaways to boot. If there’s a recipe for success, this sure ain’t it.

And yet, here we are after another Sabres win, their 8th in 11 games. They managed to make their shots count, and dominated in faceoffs for the final two periods to take home another victory. Marcus Foligno scored once, Matt Moulson scored twice, and leading All-Star vote getter Zmegus Girgensons had a goal and assist to power Buffalo’s offense.

They might not be doing it the right way, but the Sabres continue to defy the odds as they win their second straight.

Three Questions

1. Can the Sabres take advantage of one of the worst penalty kills in the league?

Nope, the Sabres went 0-2 on the power play and didn’t manage a single shot on net. Womp.

2. How long will Jhonas Enroth’s shutout streak last?

Enroth kept a clean slate until the eight minute mark of the second period, and overall stopped 42 of 45 shots.

3. Will Chris Stewart play tonight, and if so, how will he respond to his benching?

Stewart did play while Cody Hodgson was benched, and received 14:21 of ice time. He didn’t do much with that time, only getting into a second period fight, but at least he showed some spirit on the physical side.
