Sabres v. Leafs – Scoring Chances

Tracking scoring chances is a bit of a hobby for me. It helps me understand each game better when tracking how many scoring chances each team has. Last night was a perfect example of a game when scoring chances don’t tell the entire story. The Sabres had more chances than the Leafs and yet they fell 4-3 in overtime in a game they probably should have won.

The Sabres seem to be a team that can’t play both offense and defense in the same game. When they play a tight defensive style, they lack scoring chances. When they open things up, they allow plenty of chances. They allowed plenty of chances on Tuesday night and yet I believe they should have won the game. A couple of bounces didn’t go their way, they lacked finish at times (Ott clear cut breakaway), and they didn’t get a very good game from Ryan Miller. Those three important keys were the recipe for the Sabres fourth consecutive loss.

Scoring Chances

This section is a listing of all the scoring chances in the game. I will do my best to explain each column in the chart so you have a better understanding of what you are looking at.

  • Column 1 – The team that had the scoring chance.
  • Column 2 – Which period the chance took place.
  • Column 3 – The time remaining when the chance took place
  • Next six columns – Sabres players on the ice for the scoring chance
  • Next six columns – Opponents players on the ice for the scoring chance
  • Last Column – The strength when the scoring chance happened

Head-to-Head Scoring Chances

This is my favorite chart of the group. This is a list of how many chances each player had against their opponent in even strength situations. A positive number means the Sabres had more scoring chances when on the ice against the player from the opposing team. A negative number means there were more scoring chances when the opponent was on the ice against each Sabres player.
