Sabres sign Pysyk to two year, $2.25 million contract

While they wait to see whether or not free agent defenseman Johnny Oduya will sign with them or not, the Buffalo Sabres have taken care of another free agent blueliner – this one an RFA – by signing Mark Pysyk to a new two-year, $2.25 million contract, according to Tim Wharnsbty of CBC.

Pysyk spent all of last season in Rochester, though that was mostly to ensure the team finished in 30th place. This year, he’s expected to play a major role with the big club, which could use Pysyk’s injection of smarts, skating, and passing along the blue line.

This is a solid deal for Pysyk, who takes a bump in pay from his entry level contract having played in just 70 NHL games, totaling four goals and eleven assists over three seasons, but it’s also favorable to the Sabres, who will retain his rights as an RFA at the end of the deal.

Pysyk is now one of just three defensemen the Sabres have under contract past the 2015-16 season, along with Zach Bogosian and Josh Gorges.
