Sabres sign Carlo Colaiacovo and Cal O’Reilly

The Buffalo Sabres free agent frenzy continues (if by frenzy you mean a bunch of smaller, depth signings) as the team announced today they’ve signed Carlo Colaiacovo and Cal O`Reilly.

Colaiacovo will likely serve as one of the Sabres bottom two defenseman, as he fulfills the left-handed requirement and has appeared on five different NHL teams throughout his 13 year career. The problem with the 32-year old is that he just can’t stay healthy; he’s never played more than 67 games in a single season and played in just 58 total games over the last two seasons combined.

He is signed for one year at $900,000.

Cal O’Reilly is Ryan’s brother, but he’ll serve the Sabres organization as a leader in the AHL, helping turn a rapidly-improving Amerks squad into a real contender. O’Reilly was 10th in the AHL last season scoring 61 points for the Utica Comets, of which he was also the captain. He has played just a handful of games in the NHL over his ten year professional career, and at age 28, it’s unlikely he’ll ever see the ice for the Sabres.

O’Reilly is signed for two years, at a total of $1.4 million.
