Sabres sign André Benoit to one-year deal

The Sabres have signed defenseman Andre Benoit to a one-year deal worth 800k according to TSN’s Aaron Ward. Benoit, 30, spent last season with the Colorado Avalanche, where he scored seven goals and 21 assists in 79 games. He also has a tie to Tim Murray since he was in the Ottawa organization from 2010 to 2013.

Although Benoit did play almost the entire season in Colorado last year, it was the first time he’s gotten a full opportunity at the NHL level. He spent parts of two seasons up with the Senators, with 33 games being the most he’d played in a season. He’s spent a majority of his career bouncing between the AHL and Europe.

The Beniot signing gives the Sabres added flexibility on the blueline. If the Sabres decide that Rasmus Ristolainen, Chad Ruhwedel, and Nikita Zadorov are all not ready for the NHL then Benoit can fill in a spot. If they are ready to move up some of the young defenseman Benoit would be a solid addition to the Americans and isn’t a player that the Sabres would be too worried about losing through waivers.
