Sabres Score Late But Fall to Islanders in Overtime

Final Score: Islanders 3 | Buffalo 2 (OT)

Shots on Goal: Sabres 35 | Islanders 26

Sabres Goal Scorers: Victor Olofsson (14), Jack Eichel (23)

Islanders Goal Scorers: Michael Dal Colle (2), Jordan Eberle (3), Anthony Beauvillier (10)

Plus 1: Jack Does It Again

With a goal and assist on Saturday afternoon, Jack Eichel continues to stay red hot.

Eichel pushed his point streak to 16 games, which is the longest in the National Hockey League this season.

Hard to believe but it seems like Eichel is developing in front of our eyes. Some might have thought he was a superstar but he most certainly is taking that turn.

With his two points on Saturday, Eichel is now on-pace for 116 points (55 goals, 60 assists).

Plus 2: The Shot of Olofsson

Victor Olofsson’s shot continues to be a thing of beauty. When he scores a goal, you almost need to watch the replay four or five times just to fully comprehend how he managed to score from the angle he scored from.

Scouts continue to be right – Olofsson’s shot will make him a NHL’er. Through 34 games this season, Olofsson has 14 goals. That is more than fine.

Minus 1: Where in the World is Casey?

For the third time in four games, forward Casey Mittelstadt found himself watching from the press box.

There is no secret that Mittelstadt’s development has hit some sort of a plateau. With nine points (four goals, five assists) in 31 games this season, there is a lot to be desired.

Despite his struggles, Mittelstadt is still only 21 years old.

If the Sabres continue to scratch Mittelstadt, maybe a trip down the 90 to Rochester would benefit his confidence and ultimately his development.

Final Thoughts

Buffalo seemed destined to fall in typical fashion against the New York Islanders until Jack Eichel did what Jack Eichel does.

Gaining a point is always important but at some point, you will want to see more. Buffalo has enough talent three-on-three to handle opponents in overtime.

Again, take the point from the jaws of regulation defeat and regroup for Tuesday night against the Maple Leafs.
