Observation 1 | Hello Darkness, My Old Friend

Before the Buffalo Sabres took the ice for today’s matinee against the Philadelphia Flyers, the injury bug made its presence felt at KeyBank Center.

It was announced that goaltender Linus Ullmark will “be out at least a month” with a lower-body injury. A devastating blow not only for Ullmark but for the Sabres as a whole.

Carter Hutton started in lieu of Ullmark today and allowed three goals on 39 shots in the loss.

Goaltender Jonas Johansson was recalled from the team’s taxi squad to serve as Buffalo’s backup goaltender.

Forward Jack Eichel also missed today’s game, still day-to-day with a lower body injury.

The offense certainly missed Eichel’s presence.

Observation 2 | Returning to the Lineup

Buffalo had two returns to the lineup this afternoon that had fans on the edge of their seats.

Forward Jeff Skinner returned to the lineup, after being out of the lineup since February 20 as a healthy scratch.

Despite the constant back-and-forth over the past few days, Skinner appears to have taken it all in stride with his return to the lineup.

In 14:03 time on ice, Skinner recorded zero shots on goal but was one of the better forwards five-on-five, in a day where the offense struggled to get their wheels rolling.

Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen returned to the lineup for the first time since January 31, after suffering from Covid-19 and the noted complications that Ristolainen suffered from.

Ristolainen led all defensemen with 22:18 time on ice and led both teams with six hits.

Observation 3 | Good News

We promise this isn’t sarcastic at all.

Ok, that did not last long.

Buffalo takes on the same Philadelphia Flyers squad tomorrow afternoon. The Sabres will need to go to the film quick to figure out exactly what went wrong because the Flyers easily handled the Sabres for 60 minutes, from whistle to whistle.
