Sabres at Sharks recap: Buffalo beats San Jose again 2-1

I don’t know how and I don’t know why, but when the diminutive Buffalo Sabres play the superior San Jose Sharks, one team continues to dominate time and time again. But this story has a twist – in this tale, it’s David who dominates Goliath.

The Sabres beat the Sharks for the seventh straight time tonight by a score of 2-1. Yes, you read that right, the Buffalo Sabres scored two – TWO! – goals for the first time since their only other win this season on October 14 against Carolina. Cody Hodgson and Nicolas Deslauriers each scored their first goal of the season and Michal Neuvirth stood strong during a furious third period rally to give the Sabres their second victory of the season.

Neuvirth’s 29 saves helped the Sabres overcome a 2-1 deficit in both shots and faceoffs against a superior San Jose team that seemed to be sleepwalking through the first two periods. The Sabres finished with just 15 shots, but their two goals within three minutes of each other in the third period was enough to survive what was a listless Sharks attack for most of the night.

With their win, the Sabres move into 29th place, two points ahead of Carolina, though the Canes still have two games in hand. Buffalo’s road trip continues on Tuesday as they travel to Toronto to face the Leafs.

Three Questions

1. Will the right wing shuffle result in more offense?

DOES TWO GOALS ANSWER YOUR QUESTION?!?!?!

2. Can the Sabres continue their recent success against San Jose?

They have, and regardless of your tanking affinity, it’s wonderful in its ridiculousness.

3. When will Buffalo’s power play find pay dirt?

Not tonight, as the Sabres went 0/3 on the power play.
