Sabres at Senators recap: Kane-Ennis-Eichel line dazzles in 6-4 win

Yeah, this season could be fun.

The Sabres top line of Kane – Ennis – Eichel accounted for four goals, including a hat trick by Tyler Ennis, in the Sabres 6-4 victory over the Senators. It is the second game in a row that the Sabres notched half a dozen goals.

The Sabres went down two early in the first ten miuntes of the game. Buffalo responded with four straight goals and never trailed again, although the Senators kept the game interesting.

The Sabres top line was effective, creative, downright electric. Ennis made things look easy, and all three were wonderful in transition. Jack Eichel‘s ability to create opportunities out of nothing is very impressive. At one point he entered the zone himself, made it all the way around the net and was only halted by a great stop by Anderson. His assist on the second Ennis goal was picture perfect, and came a shift after he nearly created an opportunity for Ennis off a spin move.

Kane has been a Senator killer in the preseason, scoring three goals in two games against Ottawa. His goal came off a great steal by Ennis in the slot.

Zemgus Girgensons and Johan Larsson had the other two Sabres goals, with the latter coming on an empty net. Girgensons scored on a Jake McCabe shot that bounced off the boards and right onto Z’s stick.

Chad Johnson got the full game (the first time a goalie has this preseason) and left much to be desired. Marc Methot’s goal from the point was one he likely should have had, even with the screen in front of him. Two Senators goals came off of rebounds. The Sabres are giving up a lot of goals right now.

The Sabres had some trouble escaping their zone at the start of the game, but improved as the game went along. Both teams looked sloppy out of the gate, and it seemed very obvious that it was a preseason game. Ennis’ first goal was a very poor play by Anderson, who never looked comfortable after coming out of his crease to play the puck.

Eichel is ready to produce in the NHL. Ennis has players around him that can now take him to new heights. Kane may be the Sabres best scorer this season. This was a game you leave and smile, wondering how many goals the Sabres top players will score. Buffalo will have a few days to enjoy the victory before they host the Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
