Sabres at Penguins Recap: Buffalo Ends Pittsburgh’s Long Winning Streak…Again

Ryan Miller Did Ryan Miller Stuff

Get outshot but keep his team in the game? Check. A number of saves that were of Jeanneret’s “MILLLLLLERRRRRRRR!!!!” variety? Check. I think the only thing he didn’t do was stop a penalty shot, but other than that, #30 was once again the man in this game stopping 40 shots in a very solid winning effort. Per Sabres PR man Ian Ott, it was Miller’s league leading fifth win when facing at least 40 shots, which speaks to both how good Miller is as an individual and how bad the Sabres are as a team.

Steve Ott Did Steve Ott Stuff

Piss off the refs and get a 10 minute misconduct penalty? Check. Score his team-leading third game winning goal with just over two minutes left on a controversial maybe-high-stick goal? Check. Give a classic post-game interview to Brian Duff? Check. Ott is the perfect player to have on your team, and he’s the worst guy to play against, according to 28 other teams (Stars fans still love him). Sign this man to an extension over the summer.

Thomas Vanek Did Thomas Vanek Stuff

Score a beautiful one-time goal that came from simply being in the right spot and putting the puck in the perfect location? Check. Score an empty netter to once again reach 20 goals, his eighth consecutive season of doing so? Check. Make everyone around him look better by comparison? Check. If Vanek gets traded, as some want, who will score goals for this team next year? Cody Hodgson and, uh…

Three Stars

1. Thomas Vanek – 2g, 1a
2. Ryan Miller – 40 saves
3. Jerome Iginla – 1g

Comment of the Game

The Sabres suck at winning, and suck at tanking. My mind is blown by how they can do both.
