Sabres at Canadiens recap: The streak is over

Finally.

It’s been an entire month, 14 straight games – heck, we’ve even changed calendar years since the Buffalo Sabres last won a game, but it finally happened last night. The Sabres held on to a 3-2 lead in the third period to beat the Montreal Canadiens, who are now the worst team in hockey thanks to the transitive property.

Buffalo jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period thanks to goals from Drew Stafford, Matt Moulson (his first in 17 games) and Brian Gionta, and managed to hold on to that lead despite being outshot 34-18. Jhonas Enroth was a magician in the final two periods, stopping all 25 Montreal shots to help seal the win for the Sabres, their first since December 27, 2014.

While they set numerous franchise records for futility, the Sabres avoided the all-time NHL record of 17 consecutive losses, a number which they were very aware of. “We had heard about it and we definitely didn’t want to get that,” said Jhonas Enroth after the game. The Sabres fell three games short of that dubious distinction, and are now 1-14 in their last 15 games, four points behind the Edmonton Oilers for 30th place.

The streak is over, people – let us know how it finally feels to be free in the comments.
