Sabres at Blues recap: Back to losing, St. Louis wins 3-0

The Buffalo Sabres shockingly had their one-game winning streak snapped tonight against the St. Louis Blues in a 3-0 loss. The Sabres hadn’t lost a game in six days, setting what seems at this point like franchise record, but were outclassed by the Blues in the final two periods to drop their 15th game in their last 16 tries.

Things started out fine for the Sabres, as they outshot the Blues in the first period, which is a sentence I’m having trouble believing even as I type it. The good times lasted for almost the entire second period, until the Blues opened the scoring in the final two minutes to take a 1-0 lead into the third, where they’d add two more goals to make the final score 3-0.

“They have 10 Olympians and world-class Olympians on their team,” said Ted Nolan, who might fare better bringing in the Latvian Olympic team at this point. St. Louis has been a juggernaut this season, now having as many wins as the Sabres do losses, but it was encouraging to the see the Sabres stick with them for almost two full periods before (once again) collapsing late.

Three Questions

1. Will the team play any differently now that the 800-pound gorilla is off their back?

The first period was looking pretty good for the Sabres – they actually outshot the Blues 7-6 in the first – but after that we saw much more of the same.

2. Can the Sabres control the league’s second-best power play?

Giving the Blues only one power play all game certainly helped, but the Sabres shut out the STL special teams.

3. Will messing with the defense prove to be a good idea?

The bottom two lines weren’t the problem tonight, but rather the combined -4 of Tyler Myers and Josh Gorges, and Zadorov was a scratch anyway.

When the Sabres clinch 30th

I hope they have the humorous self-awareness to have “McEichel” as the fan advantage code.
